POLAR, the UK’s largest publically-available electric vehicle charging network, is up and running in the Land Securities-owned Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth.
The Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, Cheryl Buggy, officially opened the POLAR charging bays at 11:00am on Wednesday 22nd February in the Gunwharf Quays car park. On behalf of the city, the Mayor received an ‘EV Ready’ status certificate from POLAR's Chief Operating Officer Simon Daukes and put Portsmouth on the electric vehicle charging network map.
The bays at Gunwharf Quays are located on the Upper Level in the blue section near to the exit, and will allow EV owners the opportunity to charge their vehicles while spending the day visiting the shops, bars and restaurants in the landscaped historic setting.
The South Coast of England already has over 80 charging bays within an hour’s driving time of Portsmouth. In the next 12 months, the number of POLAR charging points in the area will increase to over 150. Nationwide, there are now 1,200 POLAR charging points in the UK. By the end of 2012, this will rise to 4,000.
David Martell, Chief Executive of Chargemaster Plc, commented: "We are delighted Portsmouth is moving forward with POLAR, allowing electric vehicle owners in this area the opportunity to take advantage of low-carbon motoring while enjoying Gunwharf Quays and its neighbouring facilities."
